The Mop Shop

Our Mission

My twin sister Missy and I opened the doors of The Mop Shop in Elizabeth, Illinois on August 4, 2014.

Similar to a food bank, cleaning supplies are provided at no charge to those in Jo Daviess County who self-identify as being in need.  The Mop Shop, staffed by ten warm and welcoming volunteers, is open every Monday, except federal holidays, from 10:00 am to 12 noon. Nearly 1,100 clients and family members from ten communities within the county have registered.

Clients may visit once a month and may select two higher value items (such as mops, brooms, disinfecting wipes, multipurpose cleaners) and two lower value items (garbage sacks, paper towels, cleaning cloths, dish soap).  Every other month, clients may select laundry detergent and fabric softener.  All selections are recorded for inventory purposes.

With an average of 65-75 client visits each month, it costs $300 - $350 per month to maintain the inventory.  As a non-501(c)(3), we rely exclusively on the generosity of family, friends, neighbors, local businesses, churches, banks, schools and civic organizations.  We couldn't do what we do without their continued support.

It has always been our greatest wish that this mop shop serve as a template for other communities across the state and nation.  Our initial contention was that if people could not afford food, they likely could not afford cleaning supplies.  And if they had to choose between the two, food would clearly be the necessary choice.
